5 Burning Questions with Stage Manager Samantha Flint

None

1. What is your stage manager "must have" item?

My stage manager “must have item” is a wooden script stand that my father made me when I was in college. It holds my binder at the perfect angle so I can reference my script easily while also being able to look up at rehearsal or the stage easily. Besides that, which is very specific and personal, I would say that my other "must haves" are a really good mechanical pencil that feels good in my hand all day, and a stopwatch for timing run throughs, breaks, and even COVID test waiting times!

2. What is your favorite snack for long rehearsal days?

My favorite long day snack would be something I can eat quietly and that won’t make a huge mess. Protein bars are good, also trail mix that has a mix of nuts, dried fruit and chocolate is a great mix of salty and sweet. I try to avoid candy on long days because it can be a slippery slope, but a soft baked chocolate chip cookie from NBPAC catering wrapped in a napkin and saved for the first break after Dinner is the perfect snack during tech.

3. What is your favorite Broadway musical?

Ooh, that is a hard question! But I would have to go with Ragtime, which was (coincidentally) written by Terrence McNally! It was the first Broadway musical I ever saw, and I had the privilege of seeing the entire original cast. I fell in love.

4. Have you ever had a celebrity encounter that left you starstruck?

Back in college I did a summer internship, and Meryl Streep’s daughter (Mamie Gummer- she was SO lovely!) was in one of the plays I worked on. I was introduced as one of the assistant stage managers, and, I will never forget this, Meryl Streep shook my hand, looked me in the eye and said “it’s so good what you do.”

5. What is your favorite way to relax after closing a show?

Honestly, my favorite way to relax after a show closes is to do nothing. If I can help it, I don’t schedule anything specific for the 24-48 hours after a show closes, and I revel in not having to keep a rigid schedule. I usually spend a lot of that time on my couch in comfy clothes!
