We have some truly remarkable news to share!

We are thrilled to announce that by the Fall of 2019, we will have a brand new state-of-the-art theatre home in downtown New Brunswick.

A landmark partnership spearheaded by the City of New Brunswick, the New Brunswick Development Corporation (DEVCO), and several additional agencies and organizations, has funded construction of a performing arts complex on the site of our current theatre that will break ground in the Fall of 2017 and be completed in time for the grand opening of George Street Playhouse’s 2019-2020 Season.

While this exceptional new building is being constructed, we will present our 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons at the former New Jersey Museum of Agriculture at 103 College Farm Road in New Brunswick (pictured below). In addition, we will continue with our renowned education programs including our Summer Academy and year-round classes for children and adults.

The state-of-the-art theatre complex will feature two new stages –one an intimate size similar to our current Arthur Laurents Stage and the other larger and perfectly suited for the productions of plays and new musicals such as GSP hits It Shoulda Been You and The Toxic Avenger. The bigger theater will feature 475-seats and will be complete with a full orchestra pit and a larger, expanded back stage space that will open up a world of theatrical possibilities!

The new complex promises a host of audience amenities that will make your theatre-going experience better than ever, including an in-lobby bar, numerous beautiful new bathrooms, elevators to the balcony level, modern temperature controls within the audience seating area and much more.

This has been our dream for 20 years! We are so grateful to the City of New Brunswick, DEVCO, the County of Middlesex, the State of New Jersey, the New Brunswick Cultural Center and all those involved in realizing this extraordinary new arts center. It is thrilling to offer our world-class artists a world-class theater facility in which to create. To paraphrase our popular hit musical The Toxic Avenger, “It’s a brand-new day in New Brunswick!”

We look forward to celebrating the grand opening of our brand-new theater in the Fall of 2019!
